Copenhagen School of Global Health, University of Copenhagen 07/02/2012 - 14/02/2012 PhD level course in Global Health Policy, 7-14 February 2012. In this course, students learn about institutions and frameworks for international health policy, national health development and global health governance, improving health services, making and implementing policies in a global context, and health policy changes and challenges. Aim and content The course will provide an overview of the historical and institutional underpinnings of international health policy, leading to discussion of the current debates in the field. On successful completion of the course students should be able to: • demonstrate an understanding of the tensions and debates in international health policy and how they influence present course of policy development • apply the capacity for critical assessment of contemporary trends and developments in international health policy • know how to engage with health policy making at the international level Course details The 6 day course in health policy is taught by an international team from a diverse professional base. The course will focus on the theory and practice of global health policy through policy analysis, reviews of a policy book, as well as an in-class group presentation. More specifically, the six course days will be outlined as follows: 1. Basics of health policy 2. Introduction to global health institutions and governance architecture 3. Context for health development: macroeconomics; trade; development assistance 4. Health system development: vertical vs. horizontal vs. diagonal approaches 5. Global policy processes and instruments 6. Policy case studies The course leader is Professor Maximilian de Courten from the Copenhagen School of Global Health. Other lecturers include Professor Vivian Lin and Associate Professor David Legge from La Trope University.
